Games to watch today (10/9) at the GWC
Utah County will be hosting some great games tonight at the Great Western Classic. If you have a BallerTV subscription, you’ll be able to stream them. I’ll do my best to use my BallerCam and post links for those who don’t have a subscription (my streaming link is free on the BallerCam app).
Tonight’s Matchups
4 pm - Mode Prep vs Provo: Two new-look teams take the floor on Court 1 with Mode Prep from Washington playing Provo HS. Mode has a few players who transferred from top-tier programs, including Vuk Zelic (Christ the King) and Alassane Doucoure (Prolific Prep). Both are going to get a chance to compete against two of the best Utah players in Makai Allen and Callen Tollestrup.
5 pm - Orem vs Golden State Prep: Orem has one of the most dynamic and intriguing backcourts with the combination of Troy Kaufusi, Simeon Suguturaga, and Cooper Harris. They lost a lot of scoring from last year’s team, but look primed and ready to reload and make a run this year. Golden State Prep has two teams here, both of whom played in Vegas at The Border League. I believe the GSP Grey team is their top team.
6 pm - Corner Canyon vs ABQ Prep Red: Lots of similarities between Corner Canyon and Orem, actually, as both teams look to reload and will be led by young guys with some seniors. Corner Canyon, however, has some great young bigs in Josh Tolman and Mo Brown (find me and ask to see a great photo of Mo in the 6th grade after a Murray Super League Championship win :)) and seniors Dillon Roberts and Tyler Mortensen bring a ton of experience in the backcourt. My guess is we won’t see Diesel Dart or Mo Brown at the GWC since both are elite football players.
7 pm - Lone Peak vs Springville: Early fall look at two teams who are primed to play deep into the playoffs. For Lone Peak, all eyes will be on how well Camden Broadhead and Crew Fotheringham developed this offseason (and also which players might have joined during the “transfer portal”). They also have a new coach for Lone Peak. Springville has long been a great on-paper team that has yet to put it all together. Mason Hansen and Jamyn Sondrup have the chemistry and leadership to lead them.
8 pm - LCA vs GSP Grey: I wrote about LCA’s play during The Border League, but early returns are very positive. They are deep and play a very exciting brand of basketball with shooters all over the court (and from all over the world). This is the first chance for them to play in their home state.
9 pm - Crimson Cliffs vs Cottonwood: Both of these teams are under-the-radar teams who should not be overlooked in 4A. Crimson Cliffs brings back five of their top eight scorers, including Travis Murdock and Mckay Lindquist, and if they can improve on their 16-8 record from last year, watch out! Cottonwood lost their leading scorer from last year, but Luka Cecez and Malei Atem are two young and exciting players who will have a steady hand at PG in Skyline transfer senior Itay Lustgarten.
I definitely do my best to highlight games to keep an eye on each day at the GWC and also record a podcast afterwards sharing my thoughts on the event. So stay tuned and be sure to share! Screenshot if you want to. I don’t care :) It’s a free site that exists to promote the teams and players in Utah.
