Friday Night notes from GWC:
Layton is young and loaded - Coach Miller has his team ready for the season. Yes, they blew a late lead and lost to Veritas…but Veritas is one of the better programs in the US and Layton nearly beat them. They’re tough, play hard, and Karter Miller is going to make a case for POTY in Utah I think.
Wasatch Academy plays the right way - lots of these prep and national schools rely on their strength and speed, but Wasatch Academy (who has the strength and speed and skill for sure) plays so disciplined and are absolutely ruthless on defense. Mana Wintana already looks like a guy who’s going to put some people on notice on the national stage and early returns are positive for his move from American Heritage to Wasatch Academy
General note on HS ball right now - In general, most of the basketball I watched last night was not good. I think high school players need to get off of IG and TikTok and watch actual games. It’s evident that most of the plyers only watch highlights and have no idea how to guard basic sets or set a ball screen. Put the phone down and watch full game film and write down notes in a physical notebook to increase your IQ and playing time.
On that note above, watching 2 Juco games this morning made me realize how big the gap is between Varsity basketball in Utah and the national Juco stage. The players are all much bigger and talented than you probably realize. Please try to get out and watch some games at SLCC this year if you can.
Also, if you’re undersized guard, go watch film on Jacovey Campbell from Western Wyoming. He’s probably 5’6 and 140 lbs…and he was the best player on the court vs SLCC today. As a freshman at WWCC, he shot over 40% from 3 and averaged 1.5 assists to turnovers. He fought over every ball screen and created shots and got his own against a team with a lot of D1 talent. If your undersized and want to play, you have to have a motor and IQ that makes you inevitable.
Games for today at GWC:
Early games that Utah Ballerz reported on:
Cottonwood beat a loaded Team Utah team after trailing by 15 early. Luka and Malei are the real deal.
